FIRST IMPRESSION: The Low Anthem – “Ghost Woman Blues”

by mikeflanagan1

The Low Anthem is at their best when they lean the washboard against the saloon wall and play a slow burner for last call. In the complimentary (but never redundant) vein of Oh My God, Charlie Darwin‘s semi-title track, “Charlie Darwin,” the Providence neo-folk trio keep beautifully disheveled harmonies together with a persistent but unobtrusive piano metronome in “Ghost Woman Blues”. “Charlie Darwin” was one of the best tracks of 2009, and “Ghost Woman Blues” is a preseason frontrunner for 2011 (unless Sam Beam has something to say about it…). The track will kick off The Low Anthem’s sophomore release, Smart Flesh, due out Feb. 22nd, 2011.

According to the band’s official website,

This unflanked recording was done around only a few microphones in the frigid cold of the Pasta Sauce Factory. We hope you like it. Without further ado, a little piece of Smart Flesh.

You can sign up for The Low Anthem’s mailing list and receive a free download of “Ghost Woman Blues” here.

They’re also touring in immediate support for Smart Flesh, stopping at churches, small bars, etc. There’s not a whole lot anybody or anything could do to make me miss the Old South Church gig:
